Heritage League Plans 50th Christmas Parade!
For many, the Annual Christmas Parade is an exciting tradition in downtown Siloam Springs. One thing that may come as a surprise to some is that this event is not put on by the City, but has been put on by Heritage League for the last 50 years.
The mission and purpose of Siloam Springs Heritage League is “to serve and improve the community. We toil and work together as a unit to better humanity. We undertake projects to help the needy and underprivileged in an effort to eliminate the suffering of our fellow man and to improve the quality of life. Through serving our community, we achieve a personal satisfaction as well as provide a necessary community service. To achieve this goal, we pledge to work in harmony in order to obtain our common objectives”.
Heritage League of Siloam Springs was founded in 1969 by a group of women who wanted to give back to the community. Heritage League President, Holland Hayden said “At the time, many of the members did not work outside the home. The objective of the group is the same- to give back to the community through events and fundraisers and help those in need, but the membership looks different. Now, nearly 95% of the members work outside of the home”. Now Heritage League has twenty-nine members, but there is a cap of thirty-five members. In May and April of 2020 Heritage League will have applications available for those interested in membership. Heritage League is responsible for the Christmas Parade, Breakfast with Santa, the Rummage Sale, and a Spring Fundraiser.
Heritage League does a number of things for the community of Siloam Springs and has for a long time. For over twenty years Heritage League has given scholarships to graduating seniors who are going on to additional education. Every year the members “adopt” a family in need through Bright Futures and help them with Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Additionally, they gather feminine hygiene products for the schools. In the spring they “adopt” a nonprofit in the area that is the beneficiary of our spring fundraiser. The last few years they have given to the OA Honor Flight, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Fraternal Order of Police and “Shop with a Cop”, and the Genesis House.
The community of Siloam Springs has benefitted greatly from Heritage League and all that they have done over the past fifty years. Be sure and find a great spot to watch the Christmas parade on Saturday, December 7th with your family and friends. Starting at 4pm there will be various music groups performing at Memorial Park leading up to the “Light up Siloam” at 5:45pm. You won’t want to miss out on one of Siloam Springs’ greatest traditions!
